Work starts on floating jetty

PRELIMINARY works will commence this week in preparation for the installation of a floating jetty at Westport Park in Port Macquarie.
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council was forced to remove the previous jetty adjacent to the Westport boat ramp earlier this year because of structural failure.
Council’s group manager recreation and buildings, Liam Bulley, said the old jetty would be replaced with a floating jetty at a total cost of approximately $20,000. First, he said, council would need to remove a significant amount of sand to ensure the floating structure operated as designed.
Mr Bulley said favourable tidal conditions meant the work had been moved up in council’s schedule as the sand removal works would be more effective if carried out immediately.
The sand removal will take place next Tuesday (November 5) and will result in the Westport boat ramp being reduced to a single lane.
Local residents and visitors are being asked to exercise caution if they are using the boat ramp area on Tuesday because of increased truck movements.
Mr Bulley said the floating jetty would be installed in about two weeks’ time, with installation to take approximately two days. He said there would be minimal impact on boat ramp usage during the installation process.
The floating pontoon will be utilised by commercial as well as recreational vessels.
