Bin change at hand

Red bins now come in different sizes.

GET ready to farewell your tired old wheelie bin.
Later this month, council will start gearing up for its new domestic waste collection service, with almost 40,000 bins due to be rolled out during July and August.
As part of stage one of council’s ‘Choose You Bin’ all property owners will receive a new red bin while those people who opted for the recycling upgrade will also receive a new 360-litre yellow bin in a separate delivery. New kitchen tidies will also be delivered to all households.
The contractor responsible for deliveries will be starting in the outer rural areas and then working back towards the urban centres. Residents in Laurieton, Wauchope, Bonny Hills and Lake Cathie who have selected a fortnightly service will receive their new bins in late July while residents of Port Macquarie can expect to receive their new bins in early August.
Those people who have selected the weekly or Excess service or the recycling upgrade can expect to receive their new bins in mid to late August.
Council director Development and Environment Matt Rogers said it was important for people to keep using their old bins up until the commencement of the new waste collection service on 1 September.
The new bins are easily identifiable and won’t be emptied until the new service commences.
Residents are asked to place their old red bin – and their old yellow bin if they have opted for the recycling upgrade – upside down on the kerb ready to be taken away for recycling between 8 September and 19 September.
Residents are welcome to keep their bins for storage purposes but are advised that the old bins will no longer be collected once the new service commences.
Those people who did not select a new service before 30 April will automatically receive the corresponding service and are being urged to trial it for at least two months before deciding to change.
Those people wanting to change services will be able to do so without incurring a changeover fee from 1 October through until 28 February 2015.
Mr Rogers urged people to keep an eye out for the waste information booklet that will be delivered with the new bins. It will contain important information about how to properly sort waste and reduce rubbish and will provide residents with the opportunity to win a new iPad simply by answering a few questions.
