Roadshow puts focus on men’s health

LOCAL men and women will get a chance to learn the essential facts about prostate cancer when a national roadshow rolls into the Hastings later this month.
The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia’s (PCFA) Rural Prostate Cancer Education Roadshow Program, on an Australia-wide journey this year, will visit Port Macquarie on Tuesday 25 February.
A specialised team of men’s health experts headed by local specialists will present a comprehensive education session to help raise awareness of prostate cancer within the broader Port Macquarie community.
The roadshow program is funded through a grant from the Federal Government and seeks to increase the knowledge of regional and rural healthcare providers from all disciplines who may be involved in the support of prostate cancer patients and survivors.
The roadshow is part of PCFA’s commitment to improving prostate cancer support and services to remote areas, which are often the places that experience the highest impact of the disease.
Local Port Macquarie-based urologist Dr Nadar Awad, radiation oncologist Thomas Shakespeare and cancer nurse Ken Procter will deliver the presentations on the themes of ‘Living better with prostate cancer’.
According to roadshow project officer Jessica Roberts, the program is helping Australians in remote and rural areas learn more about the disease which kills more men than breast cancer does women every year.
“PCFA is proud to be bringing the roadshow to Port Macquarie as part of its 2014 agenda,” she said.
“The program provides us with the opportunity to improve community member awareness and education about prostate cancer management, particularly in rural and regional areas like Port Macquarie, which are generally in greater need of resources.”
The Port Macquarie session will be held from 7pm-9pm at the Pier One Room in Panthers Port Macquarie. Light refreshments will be provided.
