League greats leave ’em smiling

Luke Christian and his mum Lee catch up with former NRL players Steve Carter, Brett Gillard, Jason Ryles and Bryan Fletcher during a stopover that also resulted in a $5000 donation to the hospital’s paediatric unit.

FORMER League players Bryan Fletcher, Jason Ryles, Brett Gillard, Troy Rugless and Steve Carter have put big smiles on the faces of young patients at Port Macquarie Base Hospital’s paediatric unit.
The former NRL players took time out of their busy schedules to visit the youngsters during a hospital stopover last week organised by another former league player, Port Macquarie’s Blake Cannavo.
“Having arranged for the players to visit the hospital last year and spend time with the kids, I saw how much they enjoyed meeting the guys, so I wanted to do it again for them,” Mr Cannavo said.
“We’re looking at creating an annual event to donate to the Port Macquarie paediatric unit.”
Sydney Roosters great Bryan Fletcher, Jason Ryles of St George Illawarra fame, Brett Gillard (Roosters/Panthers/Souths), Troy Rugless, who played for the London Crusaders, and Steve Carter, who holds the Penrith Panthers record of 242 first-grade appearances, were a smash hit with the children, and with staff.
“The children and their parents/carers really enjoy the visit from the football players. They love all the attention that the guys give them and the photo opportunities,” nurse unit manager Cheryl Nolte said.
“Paediatrics certainly wasn’t a quiet place today.”
During the visit, Mr Cannavo, from Bamford Engineering, also handed over a cheque for $5000.
“We really appreciate the donation to the paediatric unit, and the tremendous excitement the former rugby league players create when they visit the hospital,” Ms Nolte said.
“And just like last year’s donation, the funds will be put to good use by making the paediatric unit a little bit brighter, and a happier place for our young patients.”
Rebel Sport Port Macquarie donated footballs for the league players to sign and present to the children and ANZ Port Macquarie donated money boxes.
The former NRL players are in the Hastings for a coaching clinic with the Port Macquarie Sharks and Port Macquarie Breakers Junior Rugby League football clubs.
