Paddlers want more onboard

Mid-race changes in a moving canoe will be a feature of the Ascot Park Mouth to Mouth Outrigger Regatta being held between Dunbogan and Port Macquarie.

BOAT owners in the Hastings are being called on to play a key role in one of the region’s more unique sporting events.
The Port Macquarie Maroro Outrigger Canoe Club is seeking support from local boaties interested in taking on a support boat role at this month’s Ascot Park Mouth to Mouth outrigger challenge.
Race director Mick Wilson said at least 20 support boats would be needed for the 40km ocean race, being held between Pilots Beach at Dunbogan and Port Macquarie’s Lady Nelson Wharf on 22 March.
“The event is being run in a changes format, which means each crew has six paddlers in the canoe and three or four team-mates on a support boat, which follows the racing crew and enables the team to make regular changes throughout the race,” Wilson said.
“The drivers are therefore essential for the race, and at this stage it looks as though we could have up to 20 teams from throughout New South Wales, the ACT and Queensland.
“Any event of this size needs community support to succeed and we are very keen to hear from any local boaties who may be looking for a unique experience on the water and would like to help.”
Wilson said no experience was needed and no volunteer driver would be left out of pocket.
“The paddlers on board provide all the information the driver needs and also pay their fuel costs,” he said.
“The racing in these events is highly competitive and there’s no better way to experience the race from a spectator’s point of view than to be on the water with the canoes.
“All you need to get involved is an ocean-worthy boat and about four spare hours on race day.
“I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys their sport or just wants a great day on the water.”
Anyone interested in taking part or finding out more about the event is encouraged to phone Wes Byrnes from Maroro Outriggers on 0417 643 336.
