MEMBERS of the Players Theatre in Port Macquarie are following up the Wizard of Oz with the contemporary play God of Carnage.
The one-act play was a success in its original language, French, and has been equally acclaimed in its other English-translated productions in both London and New York. In 2009 it was awarded the Tony Award for the Best Comedy in the USA after its premier on Broadway. While in the United Kingdom it was awarded the Olivier Award for Best New Play of the Year.
Roman Polanski directed the 2011 film adaption of God of Carnage, with the title shortened to Carnage, starring Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, John C. Riley and Christoph Waltz
God of Carnage has a simple plot, about two pairs of parents, one of whose children has hurt the other at a public park, who meet to discuss the matter in a civilized manner. However, as the evening goes by, the parents become increasingly childish, resulting in the evening devolving into chaos.
The play has a four character cast – Craig Teasdell (Alan Raleigh), Gina Mansfield (Annette Raleigh), Lance Thompson (Michael Novak) and Julie Johnston (Veronica Novak).
The production will run from 14-30 March, with evening performances at 8pm and some Sunday matinees at 2pm.
