THE Mid North Coast Axemen commenced their tilt at the NSW Country Rugby Union Championships on Sunday with the first training run for the season.
The Country Championships, which will be played in Mudgee in March 2014, is the pinnacle of NSW Country Rugby representative matches.
Axemen head coach Andrew Kable indicated to his squad that it would be a hard slog at the championships and that he expected all players selected to be fit for the task.
To this end, Kable put the squad through a tough training session on Sunday which will be followed by further team training sessions together with individual training goals for the players.
Kable said that from the training squad a final championship squad would be selected and this would be based on ability as well as fitness and that some players would be disappointed in their non selection but the onus was on the individual players to impress the coaching panel.
Mid North Coast Rugby Union is currently arranging trial matches with some of the strong teams from last year’s championships including Newcastle-Hunter and Central Northern to test the players vying for selection
