NEXT time you’re heading out of Port Macquarie on Hastings River Drive allow a little longer for the trip.
The new traffic lights on the corner of Hastings River Drive and Boundary Street in Port Macquarie were switched on last Tuesday.
Work on the busy intersection commenced last October as part of the overall upgrade of Hastings River Drive between Park and Boundary streets. A significant amount of work was undertaken at night to minimise inconvenience to local residents and visitors.
Installation of the traffic lights co-incided with the completion of the Port Macquarie airport upgrade and an expected increase in traffic volume.
The project was undertaken at a cost of approximately $2.8 million and formed part of the adopted operational plan for 2013/14 including a carry-over portion from 2012/13.
The council’s infrastructure delivery group manager Gary Randall said the project had been supported by the community through development of the council’s major roads improvement strategy.
He said the project would be welcomed by the community and would provide significantly improved road safety.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution associated with the changed traffic conditions around the new intersection.
Minor works will continue in the area over the next few weeks.
