Mess message cuts through

Before slashing ...

THE main highway leading into Port Macquarie has had a tidy up – of the slashing variety.
The weed-infested state of the Oxley Highway roundabouts and verge was highlighted on the front page of the Independent on 27 March.
The highway is a State Government responsibility and as a result of being contacted by the Independent Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams subsequently took up the cudgels with Roads and Maritime Services.
Council is also believed to be making representations to Roads and Maritime Services to ensure ongoing maintenance, so the entrance to Port Macquarie looks need and tidy.
Last week a tractor and slasher set to work mowing the roundabout near the doughnut – including the reed-type plants meant to be there – to only 10cm or so high. The weeds did not appear to have been poisoned prior to slashing and looked quite healthy, albeit a little shorter.
The Independent will stay on the case and feature regular weed updates.
