HOT on the success of Sunday’s official opening, the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council is now gearing up for a family picnic day at The Lost Plot community garden.
More than 700 people turned out in glorious sunshine for the opening and the opportunity to chat with Costa Georgiadis from ABC’s Gardening Australia. He described The Lost Plot as a great place for people of all ages to spend time and to share knowledge.
Costa also used his time in the region to visit local schools and launch a new seed lending initiative at Port Macquarie Library – as well as a smaller community garden.
The next event at the Central Road site will be a Family Picnic Day to co-incide with the school holidays.
The fun day will be held between 10am and 2pm on Wednesday 23 April with lots of activities for children including face painting, story-telling, gardening and creative workshops.
The council’s community garden project officer Denis Juelicher said she was extremely pleased with the number of families in attendance at Sunday’s opening and the obvious interest people of all ages had demonstrated in getting out and growing things.
She said the family picnic day was another way of getting people to enjoy the community garden space, to meet new people, to share knowledge and pick up new skills.
Those people wanting to attend are encouraged to pack a picnic lunch and to take plenty of water and sunscreen.
Council received funding through the NSW Community Builders program and the Federal Move Eat Live Well program to establish the community garden as a place where people could come together and grow fresh fruit and vegetables, meet, learn about gardening and healthy living and to play.
It is a project designed to increase connections between residents, to celebrate community and develop and strengthen skills.
Other upcoming events at the site will include a day for people with disabilities on 30 April.
