POLICE are investigating a truck crash in which two people were killed south of Port Macquarie last week.
About 3.15am on Thursday, officers attached to Mid North Coast Local Area Command were called to the Pacific Highway, near Bago Road at Kew, following reports of a truck crash at the location.
Officers believe the B-double, with two trailers attached, was travelling along the highway when it left the roadway and hit the western embankment. The truck then tipped over and slid across the roadway for a further 200 metres, before coming to rest by the edge of the roadway.
The cabin of the truck caught alight during the crash, after which the two trailers were also set alight. The truck was carrying flammable liquids, which spilled onto the roadway.
Emergency services attended the scene and the highway was closed a short time later.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze, while HAZMAT officers assisted in cleaning material from the roadway.
Two bodies were located in the cabin of the truck, that of a man and woman.
Police established a crime scene, which was later examined by specialist forensic officers. Investigations into the matter are continuing and reports will be prepared for the information of the coroner.
No other vehicles were involved.
