Wauchope flies the flag

Premiership winning ‘Pies – the Victorious Port City Leagues Magpies 'Swoopers' third-grade side.

WAUCHOPE is the Hastings District Cricket first-grade champion following a comprehensive win over Macquarie at Oxley Oval last weekend.
Wauchope batted first and made 156 runs and then dismissed Macquarie twice, firstly for 80 and then just 51 in their second dig, to record an impressive innings and 25-run victory.
In second-grade, Wauchope caused a major upset and made it eight straight grand final titles with an 81-run win over the Port City Leagues Magpies. The ‘Pies had only lost one game all season and that was to Wauchope in the opening round of the competition in October. Best for Port City with the ball were Josh Felton (2/7), Sean Staniforth (2/15) and Peter Kew (2/16) while Kade Fens top scored with 13 runs.
In the all Magpie third-grade decider it was the Swoopers who prevailed over their clubmates the Strikers by 77 runs. The Swoopers reached 8/127 from their 40 overs with captain Greg Hall scoring 35 runs, Ryan Doherty 18 not out and Ray Atkins 17. Jamie Glason with the incredible figures of 5/16 and Dylan Lewis with 3/4 then completely tore the opposition apart having them all out for 50 in just under 25 overs.
For the Strikers, Adam Power (2/12), Rob Mooney (2/21) and Brendan Pateman (2/28) did their best to contain the batsmen, with Sam Frecklington and Mick Hourigan both contributing 13 runs with the bat. The third-grade division had a record 14 teams competing for the title this season.
In the fourth-grade grand final, it was the Pirates Rum Runners who claimed victory with a comfortable eight-wicket win over the Leagues Magpies.
For Port City Mick Gordon was the only one to show any resistance as he smashed his way to 52 runs.
The association’s presentations will be held this Saturday night, with the announcement of the players of the year from the four respective grades, while the Port City Leagues Magpies will hold their end of season function at the Port City Bowling Club on the evening of Thursday 24 April, from 6pm.
