POLICE are warning residents to be vigilant after an elderly woman was robbed by a bogus police officer in Coffs Harbour.
About 10am on Sunday, the 93-year-old woman answered the door of her unit on Columbus Circuit to a man, who claimed to be a police officer.
The man, who was not in police uniform, said he needed to access her home to conduct a security assessment.
The woman let the man inside her unit where he proceeded to ask questions about her valuables. The man stayed in the unit for around 30 minutes to ‘inspect’ all the rooms. When he left, the woman noticed her purse had been stolen.
The ‘fake’ cop is described as being of Caucasian appearance, thin build, aged in his forties, with short dark hair. He was wearing a red jumper.
Police are urging people to always ask for proper identification and never let anyone inside the home if they don’t know them. A business card is not suitable identification.
