ESSENTIAL Energy is warning of the need for extreme caution around electricity and electrical infrastructure, following a number of recent incidents where people have unknowingly picked up fallen powerlines.
The regional manager North Coast, Brendon Neyland, said there were a number of reasons powerlines were brought down, including motor vehicle accidents and fallen trees or branches, but the main one was the strong winds and lightning associated with storms.
“It is imperative that people stay at least eight metres away from a powerline on the ground, low-hanging powerlines or wires in contact with objects,” Mr Neyland said.
“Never, ever touch the line or object in contact with it. Always assume it is live and report it to Essential Energy on 13 20 80 as soon as possible. Also stay away from anything that may be in contact.”
