Going green

In brief

PORT Macquarie-Hastings Council is carrying out a series of landscaping works on garden beds and trees in the Port Macquarie CBD as part of a rejuvenation program.
Landscaping upgrades within the CBD are continuing through until 27 June. The main focus areas will be the corners of Hayward and Short and Horton and William streets, with general tree pruning taking place throughout the entire CBD. Some impacts on traffic and pedestrian movements may result from the work.
BUS BOOST
THE NSW Government has committed $100,000 to build nine new bus shelters in the Port Macquarie electorate at Bonny Hills, Kendall, Lakewood, Laurieton and Port Macquarie. Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams said the new shelters would provide improved safety, comfort and protection for passengers in the Port Macquarie-Hastings area. “In the past three years the government has spent approximately $300,000 building almost 30 new bus shelters in our local area,” she said.
GREAT VIEW
THERE was much to celebrate at the VIEW club zone conference held recently in Port Macquarie. Jeanie Clark from Port Macquarie Evening Club was presented with her 50-year membership from VIEW Club national vice-president June Greentree. Ms Clark said VIEW had been an integral part of her life with wonderful friendships. Other recipients of recognition were her daughter, past national councillor Cheryl Corbett, who was presented with her 20-year membership, and Ruth Dragos, a 10-year membership.
FLYNNS WORK
Council is advising motorists that road works will be undertaken in the Flynns Beach area from now through until the end of June, weather permitting. The works include pavement reconstruction and a reconfiguration of the bus bay and parking spaces in Pacific Drive. The works will create a pedestrian-friendly environment around Flynns Beach as well as a better and safer bus bay.
BOWLS BACK
AFTER two years on the South Coast, the Women’s Bowls NSW BCiB State Carnival is set to return to Port Macquarie-Hastings in 2015 and 2016. More than 1000 competitors are expected to descend on the region at the end of May, as the largest event on the WBNSW calendar celebrates its 86th year. Exact dates and host clubs are yet to be confirmed but details will be released closer to the 2015 event.
PLANE PARKING
A NEW car park at Port Macquarie Airport has boosted the total number of parking spaces to almost 300. The recently completed 110-space car park has been provided specifically for rental cars and airline, security and cafe staff who previously parked in the main public car park. Parking for passengers will continue to be provided in the existing public car park located at the entry to the passenger terminal building.
FERRYMAN MONEY
PORT Macquarie-Hastings Council will now receive all money collected from motorists using the Settlement Point and Hibbard ferries. The council has resolved to award the contract for the operation and routine maintenance of the ferries to Ferrymen (Port Macquarie) Pty Ltd for three years with the option to extend for a further two one-year periods. Ferrymen (Port Macquarie) Pty Ltd is the current contractor.
