Card turns heat up on MPs

At the presentation (from L to R): Maree Don, Elizabeth Raine, Harry Creamer, David Gillespie, Jeffery Tapping, Carmel Tapping, Galina Turker, Altenai Turker, John Squires, Sheryn Parry and Stuart Watson.

LATE on Tuesday afternoon member of the Hastings branch of Climate Change Australia presented Member for Lyne David Gillespie with a Christmas card with a difference.
The card was signed by 150 people who attended the national day of climate action at Port Macquarie in November.
The card reads: “This Christmas, we are calling on you to ‘beat the heat’. We want you to act seriously to combat global warming. Australians want climate action we can be proud of – action we can show the rest of the world and tell our children about. Strong action on climate change is essential to secure our future economy, environment, health and safety. This is the critical decade for action. Future generations of Australians are depending on your government to do the right thing.”
CCA President Harry Creamer said that after the presentation CCA committee members discussed key climate and energy issues with Dr Gillespie.
“David has told us he accepts the science of climate change. If this is the case, he would surely be showing some alarm at the sheer inevitability of climate-related disasters already with us, extending out for decades,” Mr Creamer said.
“We must change rapidly to a low-carbon economy. Cuts of five per cent to our emissions are not enough. The climate science that David accepts is saying loud and clear that cuts of 30 per cent by 2020 are needed to give humanity a fair chance of staying under a ‘safe’ limit of two degrees of global warming.
“We are asking David to see Minister Hunt and find out how the Coalition’s direct action plan will work, and then tell us in his electorate.”
