HELPING out your mates has been a huge part of rugby league since its inception. It was on this premise that the Men of League Foundation was founded.
After seeing true legend of the game Doug McRitchie lying alone in a hospital bed some years ago, Ron Coote was inspired to do something to bring the community together – off the field as well as on. Those who have contributed so much to rugby league deserve recognition and respect, both in times of triumph and hardship.
And so, in partnership with Jim Hall and Max Brown, the Men of League Foundation was formed to support members of the rugby league community who had fallen on hard times. Their vision was to build a foundation that provides practical assistance with everything from medical operations, rehabilitation and nursing equipment to welfare support, grants and scholarships.
More than a decade on, the foundation has grown to boast a robust membership of more than 22,000 – all passionate members working towards a shared vision to celebrate our game’s rich history and provide assistance and support to players, coaches, referees, officials and administrators from all levels of the game and the broader rugby league community.
To help raise some much needed funds, the North Haven Bowling and Recreation Club will be hosting a charity dinner and sports auction this Saturday 22 February. Tickets are just $50 per person, which includes a two-course dinner, raffle, lucky door prize, entertainment by Dean Weston and special guests Harry Wells, John Peard, Jim Hall, Bob McCarthy and many more.
The night will also have sporting memorabilia up for auction, including pieces from Mitchell Johnston, the Newcastle Knights, David Warner, Roger Federer, Norm Provan, Billy Slater and more.
North Haven Bowling and Recreation Club sports and marketing manager Shane Globits said these funds would stay in the Mid North Coast.
“A percentage will also be donated to the Camden Haven Junior Rugby League – which is great to see,” he said.
“It is a good feeling knowing that we can help out our local sporting clubs and the people that made the game of rugby league what it is today.”
To book your tickets simply drop into the North Haven Bowling Club and purchase them over the bar or call reception on 6559 9150.
