A LOCAL company has won the contract to build the new public school at Lake Cathie.
Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams said the successful tender had been awarded to local building firm A.W. Edwards of Port Macquarie.
“The contract, for just over $8.3 million includes construction and the provision of services to the site,” Ms Williams said.
“The provision of a local school for the primary-aged children of Lake Cathie and Bonny Hills is now a step closer and I am delighted to see our investment in education going to the local economy.
“A.W. Edwards has a proven track record of delivering a number of extensive local projects in our community.
“Community ownership is central to a school’s success and this is reinforced at the outset when we are able to have local contractors doing the work.
“Work on providing services to the site is expected to start next week and the school is due to open on the first day of term one, 2015. It will cater for up to 250 students.
“The new school will have 10 classrooms, a library, hall, canteen, special programs area, administration, staff facilities, toilets, games and assembly courts, a covered outdoor learning area, sports field, a car park, as well as landscaping.
“The design incorporates engineering planned to maximise ecological sustainability and the efficient use of water and energy, making the most of natural ventilation and lighting.
“I congratulate A.W. Edwards on winning the contract and I look forward to seeing work begin on the new school next Monday.”
