LOCAL firefighters hosed down the opposition at the northern zone division of the NSW Firefighter Championships in Port Macquarie on the weekend, taking out first and seventh placings against strong opposition.
“We won the championships – we are ecstatic,” deputy captain Don Davidson of Port Macquarie said.
“Our number one team came up trumps. We had an extremely good run and things went our way.
“We got away to an early start, but the competition was quite close towards the end and it was really exciting.
“Our number two team also came seventh, which was a great result, given that there were 18 teams in the competition and we had some new team members.”
Deputy captain Davidson said the rain on Saturday kept the crowds away from the Westport Park venue, but when the sun came out on Sunday, the public came out in force to cheer them on, which helped get them over the edge when points tightened up towards the end.
Port Macquarie firefighters are now gearing up for the state championships next year.
