THE Wauchope Bonny Hills Surf Life Saving Club is getting SunSmart in a big way.
Last week the club became an official partner in the Cancer Council NSW SunSmart SLSC Program and because of this partnership will receive numerous resources to implement a best practice SunSmart policy.
“One of the most exciting resources is the Cancer Council NSW sun sound audio unit device which will automatically plays a catchy jingle at regular intervals on loud speakers at Rainbow Beach during summer,” a spokesperson for the club said.
“The catchy jingle, produced by musician Ben Lee, reminds people to protect themselves with hats, sunscreen, sunglasses, clothing and finding shade.”
Cancer Council NSW community programs co-ordinator Alana Morley said the partnership marked the club as a leader in sun safety within the Port Macquarie Hastings community.
“We are ecstatic to see Peter Smith (president of the club) take this kind of initiative,” she said.
“On the Mid North Coast, melanoma is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer and NSW has the highest rates of melanoma diagnosis in the world.
“Cancer Council NSW offers the extra support needed to help clubs change and adapt their policies according to the most relevant scientifically proven research.
“Clubs will no longer have to wait years for policies to be reviewed and implemented. Surf Life Saving Australia already does so much to keep our children safe in our unique environment, we’re so grateful to have the opportunity to support clubs in this way.”
Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams attended the official partnership launch, saying she supported the initiative and hoped other clubs would follow suit.
