Port a hail hot spot

Hundreds of cars were reported damaged when hail the size of golf balls struck Port Macquarie in late October 2013

PORT Macquarie has come out near the top of another list – but it’s a list we’d all rather not be on.
Budget Direct hast just revealed its list of top five Hail Hero hotspots for the 2013/14 storm season (October to March) and Port Macquarie was number two, beaten for top honours by Armidale. Third was Southport in Queensland, fourth Coffs Harbour, and fifth Forest Lake in Queensland.
Hail Hero is a warning system that took two years to develop. The free service offers Budget Direct customers a text message warning, which alerts them to impending damaging hail at their home address, giving them at least 10 minutes’ notice to move their vehicles.
The technology was named in 2013 by Canstar as one of the eight app products showing innovation in Australia. It also took out the Australian Business Awards product innovation category in 2012, as well as taking out a prize at the 2012 Australian Insurance Industry Awards.
Since its launch, Hail Hero has tracked some 1027 storms, and sent a total of 942,622 text messages.
