AUSTRALIA’S oldest bookseller is set to open its doors in the heart of Port Macquarie.
At a time when large book chains are closing down, boutique bookseller Berkelouw Books is bucking the trend with a new store set to open in Port Central, based on Berkelouw’s unique approach.
The family business was established in 1812 and has a strong tradition of selling antiquarian, rare and collectable books, and creating spaces for people to come to together, lose track of time and share a passion for books.
Berkelouw Books MD Paul Berkelouw said the Port Central store would be much more than a standard bookshop and would offer varied and eclectic stock and an entire experience for locals and holiday-makers to enjoy.
“We will have a dedicated children’s area and a lounge area for people to pause with a glass of wine or cup of coffee while they browse our bestsellers, second-hand books and unique titles,” Mr Berkelouw said.
“Our focus is on providing value to the local community through literary events, author talks and building relationships with local book clubs, schools, hospitals and universities.
“The bookselling trade is going through tremendous upheaval and digital books and online sales certainly have a market, yet there is still a significant number of people who want real relationships, a sense of connection and tangible service.
“Our customers enjoy being able to chat with staff and other book enthusiasts about what they’re reading.”
There are 10 Berkelouw bookstores in Australia, including the trendy Eumundi Book Barn and Cafe occupying the historic Eumundi Trading Post building on the Sunshine Coast.
The Port Macquarie store is scheduled to open in October.
