Track down garage treasures

A SIX-METRE prawn net, a 1952 portrait of the Queen and a free cat are just some of the more unusual items up for grabs this Saturday 26 October as part of the Garage Sale Trail in the Hastings.
More than 100 individual sellers will be taking part as more than 80 registered sales pop up in garages and across front lawns in Port Macquarie, Wauchope and the Camden Haven.
Details of each of the sales, including addresses, opening times and what’s for sale can be found on the Garage Sale Trail website – www.garagesaletrail.com.au – and both buyers and sellers can register online right up until the big day.
If you’re a buyer, there are plenty of quality goods and quirky finds to choose from, with more than 17,000 items worth more than $48,000 already listed in the local area.
Those looking to bag a bargain are encouraged to visit the website to plan their day by creating a unique online Treasure Trail, which can be accessed on smartphones and shared with friends via social media.
Sellers will not only benefit from cleaning up their clutter, but they also stand to make some pocket money at the same time, with last year’s participants earning about $400 each.
With so many sales on the one day, sellers are urged to customise their online sale page by listing special items and uploading photos of their treasures to entice the crowds.
As well as individual households and neighbourhood sales there are a number of community groups holding sales as fundraisers for worthy causes and buyers can enjoy cakes, sausage sizzles, music and entertainment as they take to the streets to hunt for bargains.
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council is proud to be one of 110 councils around Australia who are supporting the initiative as a way to encourage people to resell, reuse and recycle to reduce landfill waste.
