Reef treat for anglers

WORK has begun on the development of the $900,000 offshore artificial reef to be built off the coast of Port Macquarie.
Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams said the Department of Primary Industries had commenced preparation of an environmental assessment for the development of the reef.
“The first crucial step involves identifying a number of potential sites for the deployment of the reef,” Ms Williams said.
“The reef is expected to sit in the water about 30 metres deep and once established it will attract iconic fish species such as spanish mackerel, cobia, pear perch and snapper.
“Mapping of over 10km of coastline between Tacking Point and Point Plomer is currently being conducted to investigate current constraints and usage in the area.”
The artificial reef is the third to be built by the NSW Government since 2011.
It is expected to boost tourism in the Port Macquarie area, which is already a popular recreational fishing destination.
