WAUCHOPE Soccer Club players and followers were out to support their local team at Hunter Stadium last weekend in Hyundai A-League round 24, the designated Hyundai Goals for Grassroots match.
With up to $10,000 on the line, Wauchope was cheering on the Newcastle Jets as they took on rivals from ‘across the ditch’ New Zealand’s Wellington Phoenix.
As the selected Hyundai Goals for Grassroots junior team, Wauchope Soccer Club automatically received $1000, and for every goal The Jets scored during the match the club would receive an additional $1,000 bonus. With a final match score of 5-0 Wauchope was awarded a $6000 donation from Hyundai, making it one of the biggest grants awarded this season.
The junior grassroots club also received 20 complimentary tickets to attend the match, an on-field official cheque presentation, and the filming of a professional one-minute video to help promote their club.
“Every season we have games that are called off due to wet weather impacting the condition of our grounds,” Wauchope Soccer Club acting registrar Tracey Eastwood said. “Our dream is to be able to get the drainage system in our fields repaired so that game cancellations are minimised.”
Now in its seventh season, the Hyundai Goals for Grassroots program was initiated to support the growth of football in Australia by nurturing the game at its grassroots level. More than 180 junior clubs have shared over $455,000 since the inception of the program.
