WORK has started on the new $8.3m Lake Cathie Public School.
Minister for Education Adrian Piccoli and Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams attended a sod-turning ceremony at the school site last week.
Mr Piccoli said he was delighted to see construction begin.
“The community has advocated for a school in this area for many of years now, and I am sure the community will serve the new school well,” Mr Piccoli said.
“I look forward to seeing the project completed and students coming through the gates on day one, term one next year.”
Ms Williams said the school would have capacity for up to 250 students.
“The new Lake Cathie school will have 10 classrooms and other facilities will include a library, school hall and canteen,” Mrs Williams said.
“Construction work will also include the building of an administration building, staff facilities, games and assembly courts, a covered outdoor learning area, a sports field and a car park.
“The school will include the latest principles of energy efficiency and ecological sustainability, with natural ventilation, lighting and water recycling.”
