NUMBERS might have been down at the RSPCA’s annual Million Paws Walk in Port Macquarie on Sunday but organisers say the day was still a success.
The RSPCA estimated that 200 people and 250 dogs participated in the walk, which was held at the racecourse in brilliant sunshine.
A spokesperson said organisers were pleased with the nearly $3000 collected through entry fees and walkers’ fund-raising.
“While this was down about one-third on last year, that’s understandable because the Port Macquarie walk had to take place a week later than the national walk,” she said.
“This was due to a postponed horse race meeting being held at the racecourse on the same day as the official national walk which – fingers crossed – will not happen again.
“I think, given all that, the turnout was good and everyone also had a great time, which is really important, so it was still a great success.”
Cam Marshall from ABC Radio was the MC, with mayor Peter Besseling unclipping the rope to start the walk, which was one lap of the racecourse.
Entertainment included displays by the Port Macquarie dog obedience and agility club.
Anyone who missed the walk and would still like to help out the animals at the local RSPCA shelter can drop off their donation at the shelter in Karungi Crescent or the op-shop in Short Street.
