Be ready to reconnect

PEOPLE affected by past adoption are invited to an information session in Port Macquarie to find out more about searching for and re-uniting with family.
The manager of the Benevolent Society’s Post-Adoption Resource Centre, Janet Henegan, said the meeting in Port Macquarie on Thursday 7 November was open to adopted people, parents and any other family members.
“About one in four Australians is affected by adoption in some way, and more and more people are coming to see us to find out about how to find and contact family members,” Ms Henegan said.
“Search and reunion is not just a matter of accessing records and files, the emotional stakes are often very high and people can experience unexpected feelings or reactions.
“Over the past 22 years the Benevolent Society has supported more than 65,000 people affected by adoption with everything from helping them search to preparing them for the emotional impact of reunion. We have also facilitated more than 1600 reunions.
“This meeting in Port Macquarie is an opportunity for the local community to hear from guest speakers who have been through the process of search and reunion, get professional advice and meet others in the same boat.”
The meeting will be held from 6pm-8.30pm at the Lions Club Hall, Hastings River Drive (1.5km outside town centre, first entrance after Harvey Norman shopping centre). There is no charge and refreshments will be provided. For details or bookings cann on 1300 659 814 or email parc@benevolent.org.au.
