Pies scramble for players

IN Hastings District Cricket, the Port City Leagues Magpies had to call in the reinforcements last weekend with 20 players unavailable for selection due to injury, work and other commitments.
The first-grade side went down by five wickets to Camden Haven in Laurieton despite knocking up a total of 193 (C. Cole 80, K. Bray 40 and T. Harris 34) but couldn’t bowl the home team out.
The second-grade team walloped Macquarie by 90 runs after amassing 5/266 from their 40 overs (J. Hall 104, L. Hutchins 59, N. Marsh 42 and B. Schneider 36) with Brendan Cunningham 4/36 and Nathan Marsh 3/24 the pick of the ‘Pies bowlers.
The third-grade Swoopers remain undefeated following their seven-wicket win over the Dolphins. Dylan Lewis 38 and Wayne Popplewell 27 got the side home while Popplewell and Jamie Glason each grabbed two wickets.
The Strikers put in a huge effort but eventually lost to the Billhooks by 51 runs. Young Guns Kade Fens 70 runs and 3/47 and Sam Frecklington 39 and 2/29 were standouts.
The 4th-grade Magpies scored a seven-wicket win over the Sea Dogs with Ian Dickson 84 and Rohan Kew 65 leading the way with the bat while Scott Graham finished with 3/39.
