I would like to congratulate Leslie Williams for her win in the recent State Election. Unfortunately I was visiting a sick relative in St Vincent’s Hospital at the time of the election and unable to listen to the results as they came in. So how pleased I was when my son-in-law rang me from the hospital, as sick as he was, after I had left and said: “Guess who won the seat of Port Macquarie?” It made my day.
Leslie Williams and Andrew Stoner were a huge support to me during my struggle … about my husband Don’s death. Politically they were my only support. They both had an excellent grasp of the whole issue and helped me to launch the book I wrote. Andrew in Sydney and Leslie in Port Macquarie.
Leslie with her nursing experience and having a brother with Cerebral Palsy spoke at the local book launch with intense feeling and empathy, something one does not often experience with politicians. She understood the dangerous vulnerability that the severely disabled face when they are hospitalised as only relatives of disabled people do. Watching her deliver her speech, I knew then that Port Macquarie could do no better than elect Leslie to Parliament. She is always approachable and has a good common sense understanding which can only come from life experience, but which not all achieve.
Congratulations Leslie.
