It’s National Water Week and our new mayor tells us that we should value and protect our fresh water sources across the Hastings, that what we put back into the environment is important.
And yet, Council is adding a waste product from the phosphate industry (Hydrofluorosilicic Acid) to our water supply at the rate of 1mg/litre. Based on 2008 figures, the Hastings region uses approximately 5500 megalitres of treated water per year. By the end of February 2013, we will have flushed, hosed, washed and watered just under 5.5 tonnes (5500kg) of Hydrofluorosilicic Acid into our precious and sensitive environment. How will this affect our freshwater sources and treasured wildlife? Council doesn’t know, because it failed to do an environmental impact study before implementing fluoridation.
Fluoride is well known as an environmental pollutant and poison and is frequently incorporated into pesticides, herbicides, rodenticides and animal baits such as 1080. So, is 5.5 tonnes a year of a known environmental pollutant going to harm our ecosystem over time? You can either wait and see, or you can contact Mr Besseling and demand that he stops fluoridation before it’s too late.
