In response to Ken Brown’s excellent letter March 8 concerning the strangulation of Australia’s marketplace by the two big supermarket chains, allow me to say in Port Macquarie we have two marvellous “alternate’ supermarkets.
At the top of Gordon Street Hastings Co-op runs the IGA and they quietly, politely, and cheerfully get on with the job. Then there is the newcomer to town, Aldi, that is going gangbusters in Hastings River Drive. Add to that mix Ken Little’s Fruit and Veg and Port is admirably served.
I manage to buy 95 per cent of our food requirements from the above without needing either of the Big Two.
