It was with a wry smile I read the letter (5/7/11), from the Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt to US Secretary of State, Hilary R Clinton, advising her that the Swedish icebreaker ‘Oden’ would not be available for duty this southern summer, clearing sea ice passages to McMurdo Sound and Amundsen-Scott bases in the Antarctic for supply ships.
The reason given was the requirement of having another icebreaker in the Baltic Sea, due to the last two heavy winters that had frozen up the Baltic Sea, Gulf of Bothnia and the Gulf of Finland, locking up freight and passenger ships in ports and the open sea for weeks. The indications are that the same freezing conditions will occur this coming Northern Hemisphere winter.
Russia has made the icebreaker ‘Vladimir Ignatyuk’ available, which allows supplies and fuel transport to Antarctica.
And so much for Mr Al Gore’s apocalyptic messages about melting ice caps, loss of sea ice and rising sea levels that is losing credibility day by day.
On the hotter end of the scale, when Mr Al Gore was asked about geo-thermal, hot rock technology on the NBC Tonight Show, hosted by Conan O’Brien 12/11/2009, he stated:-
“The temperature of the Earth a couple of kilometres down is “several million degrees”.
