On Saturday, Bookends @ Kendall held a massive book sale at the Kendall Hall. Intrepid book lovers came from far and wide in the pouring rain, braving the elements for the sake of literacy. It was a wonderful sight to behold.
Volunteers at Bookends, an odd assortment of dedicated and whacky book lovers, worked hard for months, lugging around boxes of books with cardiovascular fervour. Without these selfless volunteers, there would be no bookstore.
I would also like to congratulate the joyful CWA women who slaved over hot stoves to provide their usual range of gourmet snacks and refreshments. Thanks to their culinary efforts, Saturday’s weary book hunters remained caffeinated, energised and in top book-hunting form.
And last, but not least, I’d like to thank the Deputy Mayor Trevor Sargeant, who travelled to the outreaches of his electorate despite the inclement weather. He gave a warm and welcoming speech, waxing poetic on the glories of Kendall and our friendly community. After cutting the imaginary ribbon (Kendallites have good imagination and not a lot of ribbon), the sale was officially opened.
Thanks to everyone involved and the hundreds of people who turned up, the sale was a great success. So well done and thank you all for your dedication. It’s good to see that books and reading are not dead.
