Please include some stories which show Aussies love of a fair go — this was not the message in your July 12 issue, with the front page and page 4 expressing only negative thoughts about refugees. If everyone knew a refugee, then the them-and-us thing would disappear and you’d be friends.
People need to stop reading the Daily Telegraph. That newspaper doesn’t report the news factually and instead makes money out of stirring up hatred. To learn about why refugees come to Australia, watch the SBS program “Go Back to Where You Came From”. And also learn some facts — boat people are outnumbered more than 10 to one by asylum seekers who come by plane.
I wonder why we can’t go back to the Fraser Liberal Government’s way of dealing with Vietnamese refugees after the Vietnam War? That was more humane than any policy being put forward today by either the government or the opposition.
Please be responsible about your news. The ABC is obliged to report both points of view, The Independent needs to show a similar even-handedness.
