Just trying to care

I write in response to Lesley Chapman’s letter of the 18/8 entitled “Solar is a pipe dream”.
While I differ on many of the assertions in the letter, the one that I take the most issue with is “If people acknowledged that God was Creator and the world is His then they wouldn’t be so arrogant as to try to control the earth’s atmosphere”.
As a Christian, my faith in God leads me to have concern for the environment.
Genesis 1:28 speaks of our God given responsibility to subdue and rule over the earth. This “ruling over” implies both a capability and a responsibility. God acknowledges both our capability to damage His creation, and our responsibility to care for it when he commands us to have a “Land Sabbath” (Leviticus 25:4-11) for the land to recover. God has made us stewards of His creation and much is required of good stewards (Matthew 25:14-30). Our call to “Love our neighbours as ourselves” (Matthew 22:39) and whatever we do to “one of the least of these” we do to Christ (Matthew 25:40), means that we cannot ignore the impact that our stewardship of His creation has on others.
No one is trying to control the earth’s atmosphere, just to care for it and where possible, prevent its destruction and despoliation.
