Awards top off winning year

The inaugural year of the Port City Leagues Magpies Cricket Club wrapped up on Saturday Night with the presentation of awards at the Port City Bowling Club.
Following the merger of Port City Leagues and Port Magpies in May last year no-one imagined that three of the four grades competing in the Hastings River District Competition would reach their respective grand finals – with two emerging as premiership winners.
First grade took out its 11th title, 4th grade won its first in the 45-year history of the club and the 2nd grade side was narrowly beaten. First grade also qualified for the May Kelly Cup grand final, which was washed out twice denying them the opportunity to defend their Twenty20 title.
Chris Cole, who recently won the Arthur Hollis Medal as the district competition’s 1st grade Player of the Year, also took out the Magpies’ 1st grade Player of the Year award in addition to the batting awards (with 496 runs at an average of 31) and more importantly the Bill Neesby Medal for the Club Player of the Year.
The batting awards in the other grades were shared between Jamie Hall (2nds), Dylan Lewis and Ray Atkins (3rds) along with Tony Glen and Michael Gordon (4ths). Bowling awards were presented to Craig McElroy in 1st Grade (25 wickets at an average of 8.36) Peter Kew and Tony Glavurdic (2nds), Darren Hall and Dylan Lewis (3rds) and Adam Power and Rob Mooney (4ths).
The Players of Year were Jamie Hall (2nds), Dylan Lewis (3rds) and Kade Fens (4ths) who also won the “Junior Magpie of the Year” Award. Port City’s association with the Big Bash League “T20 World Champion” Sydney Sixers also provided a cheque for $300 to present to the club’s “Little Sixer Rookie of the Year” for the best junior player competing in their first full season in either 1st or 2nd grade senior cricket – which was won by 16-year-old Peter Kew.
The Club Person of the Year Award was shared between Greg Hall and Rohan Kew for all their hard work on and off the field while Ryan Doherty was a popular choice as the Presidents Award winner.
The club committee of Paul Byrne (president), Jade Zaicew (vice-president), Rohan Kew (treasurer), Nik James (secretary), Sean Staniforth (social committee) and Greg Hall (training, equipment and legal) would like to personally thank all their players for an incredibly successful season along with their partners and families for their tremendous support and the club is already looking forward to 2013/14.
