Weather prompts creative carnival

Due to poor weather, the Westport High Athletics carnival had to be cancelled not once but twice. Nominations were then called for athletes to compete at the Lower North Coast Athletics Carnival.
It was then decided to run a modified novelty carnival on the next available date (weather permitting of course).  The weather were finally on our side and the school was able to run a successful and enjoyable carnival where there was almost 100 per cent participation.
Competing students formed teams of four where they had to compete in six events. Each team had a team card where their results were recorded. The events were: 4 x 100m relay, egg and spoon relay, 3 legged race relay, sack race relay, long jump and vortex throw. Students also competed in a mascot dress up competition and mascot 100m sprint race.
Students also competed in junior and senior house tug of war competitions.  There were plenty of laughs along the way especially when the tug of war rope broke under full strain from two competing junior house groups sending participants hurtling to the ground. Even one of our deputy’s was sung happy birthday by the entire school.
It was a memorable day watching our non athletic students and the support unit give it their all. There was plenty of colour with our students creative minds shining through on the day. We had smurfs and princesses competing along with a yellow car. House points were on offer for participation and best dressed. The event received high appraisal by the students, staff and the community. Overall, it was fun memorable day which the school hopes to repeat in 2013.
The best dresses mascot was awarded to Colleena Smith dressed up in her little yellow car.
The winning teams and students on the day were: 13’s team – KTJB (Tiffany Bartlett, Kate Clarke, Jessica Hayes, Brodie Baldwin); 14’s team – The Benchwarmers (Reef Christianson, Brodie Sharpe, Ethan Houldsworth, Will Lewthwaite); 15’s team – Sexy Kents (Elissa McKinnon, Lee Kerr, Brendon McRae, Jayden Payne); 16’s team – Cauliflower (Brody Brockman, Jack Lewthwaite, Nick Lambert, Brad Barnett); 17’s team – Tiana’s Group (Miranda Newby, Tiana Rickwood, April McLennan, Liam McCluskey).
The winning house was Bukari, followed by Weira in second place, Talwong in third and Kula coming in fourth.
