Breeding ground for swimming talent

Recently six of Port Macquarie Amateur Swim Club’s finest young talent competed at Sydney Olympic Pool and Aquatic Centre in the Country Short Course Championships.
Leyton Wall, our youngest competitor at 10 years old recorded an amazing personal best of 35.07 in the 50m freestyle and a credible 1.18.42 in the 100m free.
Inspired by our very own ‘Missile’, James Magnussen, our youngest girl representative, Jacinta McAvoy competed in the 12yrs girls division, and in all five of her events recorded personal best results. An incredible achievement for a young lady aiming for stardom already.Jacinta’s best result was claiming a bronze in the 12 years 50m freestyle recording a 28.49.
In three of Jacinta’s remaining four events she was placed top ten in the state, 7th in 200m free and 10th in both 100m and 200m backstroke. Things are looking very bright for this summer’sswim season Jacinta.
All our other competitors competed in the 15 year and over age division. Kaitlyn Mapstone, Clayton Smith and older brother Jeremy, and also Kolby Kemmett.
Most notable result was Jeremy Smith taking out bronze in the 50m free with a PB of 23.96. Great effort. Jeremy didn’t stop there, he also smashed out PB’s in all the remaining three events he contested, finishing 8th in 50 backstroke, 9th in 100 backstroke and 11th in 100m free.
Jeremy was well supported by Kolby Kemmett, who finished the weekend with five PB’s out of the six events he contested. Kolbys best result was a PB and 13th overall in the 50m free with a time of 24.68. The amazing thing is this time was less than a second behind Jeremy but resulted in 10 places separating them.
Finally, Kaitlyn Mapstone, the only other female swimmer from Port Swim Club to make it to the Country Short Course Championships didn’t disappoint as well, finishing the meet with two PB’s from her six events. Kaitlyns PB’s were in the Open 100m Individual Medley and 15yr and Over 50m Free recording great times of 1.14.08 and 29.49 respectively.
A big congratulations goes to the team that did Port Macquarie proud at this year’s Country Short Course Championships.
