Ironman raises $15,000 to fight lymphoma

When Corin Hansford heard of his good friend and mentor Lewis’s lymphoma diagnosis he felt compelled to do what he could to raise awareness about this cancer that was threatening his friend’s life.
Corin participated in the most gruelling of human physical endeavours — the Ironman Australia Triathlon in Port Macquarie on Sunday, May 1, specifically to raise funds to support Lewis and fellow lymphoma patients.
Corin hopes to raise $20,000 to donate to Lymphoma Australia, with the funds going toward patient support services and research into lymphoma, and has almost raised a staggering $15,000.
Lymphoma is now the sixth most common cancer and the number one blood cancer in Australia – more common than leukaemia and causing more deaths than skin cancer.
The number of newly diagnosed patients has more than doubled over the past 20 years and this trend continues to increase for no known reason.
Every two hours another Australian is diagnosed.
Every six hours another Australian loses his or her life to this disease.
Further to this, recent research by Lymphoma Australia has highlighted that, as a general lack of awareness of lymphoma, 81 per cent of Australians are also unaware of the symptoms of this cancer.
