Big battles for top four

Tweed Tennis By PETER LUC

WITH the last round of the junior season for Friday pennants and Saturday fixtures now completed, the top four teams are on their way to this weekend’s semi-finals.
There’s sure to be some epic matches to determine the finalists.
A big congratulations to all of the teams that have participated. There are a few teams that were so close to making the top four and I’m sure they’ll be up there next comp.
Also, a big thank you to all of the team supervisors. The parents who volunteer their time to get their teams organised and through each round, helping the juniors learn that it as much about fair play and fun as it is the competitive side.
On the tournament scene, some juniors recently headed to the Toowoomba Junior Champs. Highlight players were Caleb Maxted and Manu Rowe.
Caleb made it to the under-16 boys main draw quarter finals while Manu was knocked out early in the main draw then bounced back to win the under-16 boys consolation final.
The boys paired up in the under-16 boys doubles as No. 2 seeds, making it to the final where they went in as underdogs to the No. 1 seeds and highly rated Gold Coast brothers, Alexander and Nikola Crnokrak. That didn’t deter the Tweed District boys and they won in brilliant fashion 6-2, 6-2. A great accomplishment.
Not to let his older brother get all the glory, Jai Rowe was runner-up in the under-12 boys consolation final.
At the Redcliffe Open, the girls showed their skill with Amber Molloy making it to the AMT round 16, losing to the No. 1 seed and eventual winner. Hannah McDonald also stepped up in age group taking out the under-18 girls consolation and made it to the AMT consolation semi-finals. Both girls then paired up in the AMT doubles making it to the semis before succumbing to the No. 1 seeds.
Sonic assistant coach, Annabelle Borges, put in a guest appearance, and showed how good she is, making it to the AMT round 32 going down 4-6, 4-6 to the fourth seed.
