PORT United took full advantage of its third-place finish in the Football Mid North Coast Premier League when it defeated the second-placed Macleay Valley Rangers on Saturday.
The win means United now has two chances at making it into the grand final at Port’s Regional Stadium on Saturday 21 September.
Port will be hoping to only need the one when they take on premiers Wallis Lake at Boronia Park in Forster this Saturday.
United only needed one goal to get over the line against Macleay Valley.
Youngster Liam Clarke netted the only goal of the contest three quarters into the first half.
The Port side rode its luck at times with Rangers striking the post late in the game and United’s Jack McDonald also having to clear off the line in the dying moments.
Goalkeeper Nathan Attwells was named man of the match for United after a strong performance.
In reserve grade, United came away with a strong 2-0 win over second-placed Rangers to also move it within one win of a grand final berth.
Port will now face Taree this Saturday. Goals from Matt Broderick and James O’Connor secured the result, which was United’s sixth win in a row.
