Rivalry brings out winners, the team spirit

In local cricket, the rescheduled HRDCA 20/20 Grand Final Day at Wayne Richards was washed out again last Sunday, meaning the first placed team in each grade was declared the winners, based on the results of the five preliminary matches.

The May Kelly Cup 1st Grade winners for 2012/13 were Macquarie, the 2nd Grade Brett Border Shield went to Wauchope, Comboyne were declared the 3rd Grade John Spencer Shield Champions, while Camden Haven have picked up the 4th Grade Merv Bourke Shield.

The Semi-Finals of the regular season start this weekend with two-day matches in 1st Grade, where Minor Premiers Macquarie will host the Port City Leagues Magpies in the Grand Final Qualifier and the Port Panthers Pirates face Wauchope in the elimination Semi-Final.

In the two-day 2nd Grade Finals it’s Wauchope versus Macquarie in the Major Semi, while the Leagues Magpies clash with Bonny Hills in the Minor.

The lower grades will play one-day games where, in 3rd Grade, Comboyne meets Camden Haven to see who advances to the big one, while Beechwood takes on Wauchope Red in the knockout game; and in 4th Grade, Wauchope welcomes Port City in the Qualifying Final; while Camden Haven faces Comboyne in the do-or-die Semi-Final.

The Comboyne Tigers also walk away with this year’s Club Championship with 5.03 points, just ahead of Wauchope on 4.76 and the Port City Leagues Magpies on 4.28 points.

Meanwhile the inaugural Grant-McMahon Shield played between the Leagues Magpies and the Port Pirates and based on results throughout the regular season involving all grades, saw Port City win the title by 22 points to six. The Shield honours the intense rivalry over a number of decades between the two Clubs and the integral roles of Leagues Legend Craig Grant and Pirates stalwart Grant McMahon.
