Yoga leaders, enthusiasts and celebrity yogis will be joining together to Salute the Sun at the Yoga Aid Australian Challenge at over 30 venues across Australia on November 12 and 13. The Port Macquarie Challenge will be held on Sunday, November 13, from 8.00am (registration from 7.30am) at Town Beach.
The Yoga Aid Challenge promotes awareness of yoga in the community while raising money for local charities. Now in its fifth year, the Yoga Aid Australian Challenge has raised more than $1 million world-wide with this event.
Port Macquarie yogis have raised more that $15,000 for various charities including Save the Children Australia, the MS Society and the Nelune Foundation since the first local challenge in 2008.
In this year’s challenge the team Port Macquarie Yogis is currently the second ranked fundraising team in Australia!
Denis Juelicher from The Yoga Shala is the coordinator for Port Macquarie’s Yoga Aid event.
“I am thrilled to bring Yoga Aid to Port Macquarie and give my students and other local yoga practitioners the opportunity to be part of a growing international fundraising event,” she said.
To complete the Yoga Aid Challenge, participants will perform 108 sun salutations. Each salute consists of a number of yoga postures linked by a flowing movement. The completion of the challenge takes incredible effort, as each Sun Salute is quite strenuous. However, yogis of all levels are encouraged to participate and given less strenuous versions of the Salute and/or opportunity to rest.
The main focus of the event is not the physical challenge but the opportunity for the yoga community to give to people in need. Participants register online to raise funds for charity before the event.
Yoga Aid was created by a group of Australian yoga enthusiasts who wanted to give something back to the world through their love of yoga. The Yoga Aid Challenge was an idea of facilitating the ‘giving is living’ concept for the yoga community worldwide.
Due to the success of the initial Australian events, the enjoyment of participation and the wonderful global yoga community, Yoga Aid expanded the events internationally with events taking place in several countries across the globe, including America, Japan, India, Hong Kong and the UK.
The Yoga Aid Challenge is a fun and safe event for all, regardless of age, yoga experience or fitness level. The event is free to attend and all the money raised goes directly to the charity partners.
