Enduro ride: bar raised

Particpants in this month’s Mountain Bike Enduro event hope to raise as much money as they can for the Cancer Council.
A chance encounter and a brief conversation between Rotary Club of Port Macquarie’s Neil Black and Hastings Valley Mountain Bike Club member Jamie Vogele, culminated in the exciting joint venture with the Cancer Council of the Do It For Cancer Cure 6 Hour Mountain Bike Enduro.
Mr Black said the bar had been raised for this year’s ride.
“Individuals and teams of all ages will be competing for excellent prizes throughout this exciting fund-raising event,” he said.
“There is an expectation of raising around $7500 from the registration fees, sponsorships and donations which all go towards our fund-raising goal.”
The thrilling six-hour Mountain Bike Enduro is to be held on Sunday 28 July 28 from 10am until 4pm at the Mountain Bike Clubhouse in Telegraph Point.
The seven categories for the event include the Junior category, 13 to 17 years, in which the fastest rider in the six-hour Enduro will win the prestigious Jack Griffin Perpetual Trophy plus $200, donated by the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise.
The trophy is being presented for the very first time at this fund-raising event.
Jack Griffin, OAM, is a name synonymous with cycling achievements in competitive and charity arenas, including the inauguration of the famous Grafton to Inverell Cycling Classic.
Just prior to his passing from cancer in March this year, Jack insisted a perpetual trophy be established and awarded each year to an outstanding junior who excels in any sport or discipline.
Participants in this year’s Enduro hope to raise at least $ 7500, specifically for prostate and pancreatic cancer research. A total of 288 people are diagnosed with cancer every day which means every five minutes another Australian is diagnosed with the illness.
Community Engagement manager Brenna Smith said the Cancer Council NSW had provided $3.3 million for prostate cancer research over five years.
“The prostate cancer survival rate is up from 58 per cent in 1982 to 92 per cent in 2010 – all thanks to the generous communities like Hastings who have supported Cancer Council’s fund-raising events,” she said.
“However, there is still a long way to go before our job is done.
“With your help – donations, sponsorships and involvement in the Enduro, you will be making a life-changing impact for those battling cancer as well as supporting programs that aim to conquer cancer.”
