Three generations take on Khanacross

Three generations of Barnes boys joined forces recently to represent Kempsey Sporting Car Club in the Khanacross at Unkya Reserve.
The Barnestormers crew included: Phil Barnes – grandfather, Shannon Barnes – father, Jacob Barnes – son. Youngest in his club, Jacob Barnes, competed in his first race at the young age of only 12. Jacob drove a five-speed manual VP Commodore and received an Encouragement Award for his efforts. Having only learnt to drive earlier this year, Jacob is definitely one to watch.
The Khanacross events are not for speed. They are based on skill, making it an ideal sport for younger participants. Each test is designed to test the skill and judgement of the driver. The youngest age to begin racing is 12 with an observer and 14 to drive solo.
Shannon Barnes, Jacob’s father said, “He’s been pretty excited to start racing. I definitely didn’t push him in any way. You know, if he wanted to have a go, he could have a go and he couldn’t wait to be old enough.”
While a lot of people consider car clubs as quite an intensive experience, Kaye Barnes ensures that it is not, it’s a fun family sport that teaches young ones the fundamentals of driving.
“All young ones should be doing it to gain experience before they go for their Ls,” said Kaye.
The Barnes family has definitely passed this ‘need for speed’ trait on to each generation. Phil Barnes started racing in Sydney some 30 years ago and, after taking a sea change, continued to compete alongside his son in Kempsey.
“Well, my father he started competing in these competitions when I was younger and he got into it with other members of the family then, when I got old enough, I started competing. Just happened that way,” said Shannon Barnes.
Kempsey Sporting Car Club was formed on June 6, 1956 and today has grown to include more events, from Hillclimbs and Motorkhana to the Khanacross. The club is a family friendly environment dedicated to teaching young ones to handle a vehicle and for the enjoyment of spectators and members alike.
The Kempsey Sport Car Club meets on the first Wednesday of each month at Kempsey Railway Station Sports Meeting Rooms, for those who are interested in trying it out or simply enjoying to sport from the side -lines.
