Competition in free fall

Parachutes will be descending onto Town Beach over the weekend of June18 and 19 when Port Macquarie hosts the 50th Australian National Style and Accuracy Parachuting Championships.
Competitors from around Australia will be competing in the Australian Parachute Federation’s national titles.
“Accuracy landing is the oldest sport parachuting discipline in Australia and these championships mark a significant milestone in the sport,” says event organiser and sport parachutist Ian Robertson.
“Accuracy landing involves the parachutists manoeuvring themselves to land on a 2cm disk in the centre of an air filled landing platform.
“Often described as aerial darts, highly experienced competitors are not content with anything other than a series of dead centres, 0.00 every time.
“We will be hosting most of Australia’s top accuracy sport parachutists at this event and it is many years since it has been held in New South Wales.
“Local sport parachutists are also looking forward to competing. Accuracy parachuting is a very spectator friendly sport,” says Mr Robertson.
“The real action takes place on the ground as parachutists land and spectators are encouraged to come along, watch the action and cheer on the competitors.”
Port Macquarie’s picturesque coastline, river and hinterland aerial vistas should also delight competitors as they have the opportunity to take in the views before preparing for their landings.
Unlike other skydiving disciplines, accuracy parachutists exit the aircraft at only 4000 feet so their openings and approaches are also easily viewed from the ground.
The competition is judged in full view of spectators and several Australian judges are internationally qualified, judging regularly at competitions around the world.
The event provides an opportunity for residents and visitors to see National and International sport parachuting champions compete for this year’s titles.
