The Challenge is on

Join the fastest growing aquatic sport and become a Dragon Boat paddler for this fabulous spectacle and challenging event — the third and biggest yet.

If you are a supporter or spectator, make sure you get here early to get the best vantage point.

Fast, furious and fabulously entertaining racing starts at 8.30am sharp on the Hastings River directly in front of The Westport Club, with 10 sports crews competing.

Will the Manning Dragons (winners in 2010) retain The Westport Dragon Boat Challenge perpetual trophy or will Port Macquarie’s own ‘Flamin’ Dragons’ take the prize money and win back the trophy, or will it go to a new club?

This will be an action packed day with something for everyone, with snacks and refreshments on site.

The 2011 Challenge sees new and additional categories and prizes:

• Pink race — (breast cancer survivors only)

• Men’s race (each club participating is eligible to have one men’s team).

The Port Macquarie Flamin’ Dragons’ “Baby Dragons” are set to make their first public outing, racing for the first time, at the Westport Challenge on the Sunday.

The 11 Juniors [boys and girls] have been working diligently each Wednesday evening, learning and practising their paddling technique, race starts and all the other elements. Several are already participating regularly in the Club Saturday morning runs with the adults, including our Mexican Rotary Exchange student, Emily Ache-Gonzales.

Ages range from 12 to 17 and the “Baby Dragons” will be participating in the 10’s boat section of the draw.

At the close of the racing, the trophy presentation will take place at The Westport Club at around 3pm.

So get behind Port Macquarie Flamin’ Dragons, and Port Macquarie Surf Life Saving Club who organise the racing and support crews for this event.
