Lifesavers swap surf for pavement

Forty members of the Port Macquarie Surf Life Saving Club joined thousands of runners in this year’s City2Surf in Sydney on the weekend.
The group took on the gruelling 14km course from the city’s CBD to Bondi Beach.
Spokeswoman for the group, Mel Cockshutt, said only five members of the group had participated in the City2Surf before.
“Ages ranged from 10 years (Zach Cockshutt was the youngest participant) to almost 50,” Mel said.
“The day started miserably — it was wet and poured down just before the start of the race.
“Luckily that was the last that we saw of the rain.
“It was 14km from City to Bondi Beach up the infamous Heartbreak Hill.
Mel said the campaign to get Club members in the race began when a couple of mums at the Club wanted to get a group together to run the race — a challenge for both kids and parents and something to keep the motivation levels high instead of hibernating during the winter months.
“The atmosphere was great and from all accounts, the group is keen to go again next year. Tamarama Surf Club was kind enough to allow us to stay at their Surf Club — only 1km from the finish line — perfect accommodation,” Mel said.
“On the Saturday we were able to meet and greet the Bondi Rescue Lifeguards.
“If people in the community would like to donate to the Club, please send cheques payable to the Port Macquarie SLSC, PO Box 4, Port Macquarie or go to the website www.pmslsc.com.au and follow the prompts.”

The season starts on Saturday, September 24 and goes through to Anzac Day, 2012.
