Gillespie’s surf trip

NATIONALS candidate for Lyne David Gillespie said it was an eye-opening experience to see first-hand the condition of the Port Macquarie Surf Club.

Mr Gillespie last week met with Jade Zaicew to discuss the need for building renovations and improvements to their clubhouse.
“Surf clubs play a very important role in our society. They provide invaluable life-saving services to help prevent drowning. They provide a focal point for the community to come together, socialise and learn critical skills that have a real benefit in other areas of life too,” Mr Gillespie said.
“It has been quite eye-opening having a tour of the building with him and seeing the significant problems facing this club.”
Mr Zaicew said the Port Macquarie Surf Club, like many of its peers on the NSW coast, needed urgent work done.
“Our club has a number of building issues. It needs its showers fixed, a new roof, new fire exits and railings and a car park with disabled access,” said Mr Zaicew.
“We aren’t looking to a flash new super club, we just need funding to meet our needs and comply with the law.”
Mr Gillespie said the Coalition had recently announced a policy that would benefit all surf clubs.
It involved establishing an $8 million fund that would be used to help clubs purchase equipment.
